STATEMENT OF INTENT
Amor Martis Spring Summer 20/21
Using the compilation photography of nomad mothers carrying their babies from around the world, I am inspired by the unique and unendingly million ways of tying and carrying in the traditional days. The practice is called baby wearing, which means lifting or carrying baby in a sling or any other way in the form of ‘wearing’ the baby. The practice of baby wearing is also benefiting as the attachment of both mother and her baby, ‘Amor Martis’ came from Latin word which means A mother’s love. Amor Martis was adapted by the maximalism style, which is using the composition of loud and individually unique style, mixing textured and curated organic patterns into bold looks with different aura from each collection pieces.
Silhouettes that I will be using for the collection are based on the draping and collages that I have made, which was mostly straight/shift, A - Line, X - line, while having some parts oversized as the implication imagery for where the supposedly babies are located. My designs are highly influenced by the wrapping and tying effect on a folded and overlapping fabrics, but also in a way that it is efficiently uncomplicated to wear. In order to achieve that, I further developed my designs into the technique of ruching, gathering, drawstring and mostly focused on draping. Another textile manipulation that I would be using is a DIY pleated stripes and cut-out prints that could be used as a tying effect on a garment.
Targeting the season of Spring Summer 20/20, I wanted this collection to be in the context of High Summer Resort wear. The natural and organic theme inspires me to use light-weighted fabrication such as linen, sand washed satin, knitted mesh, cotton polyester, and pleated stripes. By using light-weighted fabrics, I am able to achieve a lot of layering through my designs without makes it heavy and stuffy, while finishing mostly bias-taped instead of lining. For the colours, I focused myself on the influenced vintage photography style of the inspirational images, combining dusty and organic secondary colours to a few highly saturated ones. The playful textures of fabric that I wanted to use seemed to be rare with the colours that I use which makes me diy-dyed my own striped mesh knitted fabric from white to bark.
This collection targets women at any age who enjoys expressing themselves in bold and confident fashion, to collect, curate, and cataloging, regardless of their age. Therefore, the suitable muse for this would be Margherita Missoni. Margherita Missoni is the third generation of fashion brand Missoni fashion house. Her personal style was deeply portrayed by her brand and home design that are full of retro prints, vintage furniture, and junk-shop bounty. Alongside her brand Missoni, which was known for its zigzag, patterned, and kaleidoscopic prints.
