STAGNANT

Around the world, poverty involve more than the lack of income and productive resources to ensure sustainable livelihoods such as hunger and malnutrition, limited access to education and other basic services, social discrimination and exclusion, and also the lack of participation in decision-making. Stagnant poverty covers the poor mentality that leads to bad decisions, decisions that may seem counterproductive but was entirely rational, even shrewd. Weighed down by a scarcity mindset and tunnel vision, the poor are at risk of making choices that feed the poverty cycle.

Inspired by the mentality of the poor living conditions, I wanted to explore the beauty in adversity whereas in my point of view, the poor are seem to be happier that the rich. Mentality of the poverty makes the poor looping in the undending cycle unless there is outside intervention. A mentality that there is no way for one to get out of poverty and so in order to make the best of the situation one must enjoy what one can when one can. This leads to such habits as spending money immediately, often on unnecessary goods such as alcohol and cigarettes, thus teaching their children to do the same and trapping them in poverty.

By outlining collages and manner of seeing from outside of the box, i am able to build oversized silhouettes such as boxy, balloon top/dresses, and messy figures. Most images i use was the common scenery you would see in the more simple part of town, such as traditional places like markets, and also some key items that i find interesting such as carpoolers, traditional chinese shophouses, etc. In these interesting categories, i can also took some details that can became part of the outfit such as bowtie. ruching and drawstrings, and tattered clothes that is often seen in these areas.

In the season of prefall 20/21, organic style of layering and disfigurement will bring depressing style into uplifting look. Bright colors such as Yellow and fuschia also represents the colors found in traditional pasar malam. It is also portrays the feeling of joy and happiness, and using those in the midst of shortage lighten up the mood.

There are two people that reminds me of these kind of lifestyle. First is Mark Wahlberg. Raised from a tough childhood, he was well known as a vicious hooligan since teenager. Mark did drugs and crimes as young as 13 but soon manage to settled down into acting and is really good with action and stunts that requiresfire arm. Second muse is Leighton Meester. Her messy and dodgy past story had made her into a tough lady and what most important is that she is still going strong and happy with her life.
