INSANITY'19/20

My inspiration for final graduation show is Frankenstein’s mad scientist. Combining science fiction and criminality, mad scientists are those who challenges the law of nature and rejection by the outside world into crazy experiments. They will do whatever it takes to achieve their goal, even if it means danger and the sacrifice of others. Just like doctor Frankenstein who conducted experiments that crossed "boundaries that ought not to be crossed”, he created his very own monster to fulfil his obsession in the power of nature and chemistry. In the story, Dr Frankenstein abandoned his monster because of an intense feeling of guilt. He was exaltation in joy but later turned into disgust as it was not physically beautiful. The poor monster entered life with a gigantic and enormously strong body, but with the mind of a new-born. And as he tried to affiliate with the society, he realised his physical grotesqueness, an aspect of his persona that blinds society from his gentle, and kind nature.

The Hand stitch

I was inspired by the stitches that was used for surgeries. Putting myself in the shoes as a mad scientist, i ask myself what if i use these stitching methods into a garment link and detail?

The creator of most influential mad scientist in literature was by a woman, which is also the reason why I choose my collection’s genre as womenswear. I was inspired by how the mentality of a mad scientist works, and I decided that I wanted to challenge rules that is contrary to the ‘law of nature’, but in fashion. From many of the trials that I did, the experiment that I will be using was taking surgery stitches into the part of my garment as attachment. Alongside with combining Frankenstein’s monster aesthetic emotions of lost and sadness, and the discolouration process of a dead body inspires me to use its colour as my main collection theme. However, Frankenstein’s monster for me was in the midst of good and bad, which I think is between warmth and cold, which is why I choose the season as Pre-fall 19/20.

The Prints

I was inspired by a famous characteristic on emotional function called Roschach test, to create a lot of experiments with blotches of inkblots prints in my collection. The imperfection and defect of a human being was not something that most people find beautiful, but to these ‘mad’ scientists, they considered it as art. Which is why I applied the techniques of deconstruction and shape collages of unpleasant matter such as swollen, rash and bruises as rounded and asymmetrical silhouettes, and colours.

The tiara

For my collection accessories, i wanted to portray the toughness of a monstrous image of Frankenstein, but in a female point of view. In my research, i decided that i will create a tiara that is made from screw heads. I was inspired by head pieces from Dolce&Gabbana.
