TRASH TO FASH
A FASHION COMPETITION HELD BY TEMASEK [HOSTED BY ECOSPERITY & TABULA RASA]
WHAT YOU SEE IS NOT WHAT YOU SEEÂ SS19/20
4 MARCH - 3 JUNE
Trash to Fash is an upcycling competition by Temasek, in conjunction with Ecosperity Week 2019. I was amongst the 26 selected teams (out of 44 applicants) that undergo a guided process to create wearable pieces using recycled PET (plastic) fabric. Participants then are needed to design an apparel based on a challenge statement, and shoot a 2-3 minute pitch video featuring the finished product. Our product will be judged based on creativity and innovativeness. They will select top 8 teams, and the top 3 winners will vie for cash prizes worth S$8,000 at the Fashion Show Finale which was held on 3 June 2019.
Winning top 8 and first runner up
All 8 designs were exhibited at Ecosperity Week to an audience of over 2,000 global sustainability leaders. The top 3 team members were invited to speak about our upcycled apparel and the competition to the guests there, and the most thrilling experience was to meet and speak to Mr Masagos Zulkifli, Singapore's Minister for the Environment and Water Resources!
The outfit were displayed at Temasek Shophouse, Orchard Road (beside MacDonald House).
WHAT YOU SEE IS NOT WHAT YOU SEE
Our apparel is a two pieces look called What You See is not What You See. We believe that sustainability is about creating relationship between customer and the product itself. There is a story behind the materials that we used, which you can not see it directly from the garments. The sustainability that we have done here is to produce the apparel with items those are unwanted. We used leftover fabric from school projects, spoiled charger cable, finished thread core and of course the rPET fabric. It is an occasional wear influenced by the high street style.
